How Snoring Can Harm Your Teeth

Posted on 6/15/2017 by Tessa Smith-Greisch
A man snoring with his mouth open.
Do you snore? Perhaps it is someone else in your household? The noise that comes along with a person snoring isn't the most important factor to someone snoring. Snoring is a symptom of a larger problem.

It is important that you get the snoring checked out by the doctor or the dentist, as they can diagnose the problem and let you know what the best treatment would be. However, until you get a full diagnosis, it is important that you do what you can to help protect your teeth.

Snoring is Dangerous to the Health of Your Mouth

When you snore, it means your mouth is open. Even if it is only open a slight amount, it is still open. This means your teeth and the surrounding tissues of your mouth get dry.

When your teeth get dry, it means you do not have enough saliva covering your teeth, and that saliva is necessary. Saliva plays a very important role in your mouth.

It coats your teeth in nutrients, helps to replace enamel after it gets worn away, washes away debris, corrects the pH balance in your mouth, and helps your oral tissues to heal.

When your teeth dry out during snoring, you are missing out on all of these benefits. This puts your teeth at much greater risk of decay and cavities, leaving your teeth at risk.

The best option you have is to get in to see your dentist or oral surgeon right off the bat and get a mouth guard. It can help keep your mouth closed enough at night to protect your teeth. Plus, then they can work with you to diagnose the problem that is causing the snoring.

Contact our office today if you have been snoring, and get to the root of the problem. Just be sure to protect your teeth along the way.
