Benefits of Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery alleviates impediments in speech, mastication, and other oral functions caused by jaw misalignments, promoting improved oral function and health.

By correcting facial asymmetry and imbalance, orthognathic surgery restores facial equilibrium, fostering heightened self-assurance and confidence.

Aligning the jaws through orthognathic surgery enhances bite and occlusion, facilitating enhanced chewing and biting efficiency while alleviating strain on the jaw.

When complemented by appropriate orthodontic interventions, orthognathic surgery yields enduring corrections to jaw abnormalities, ensuring long-term stability and functional improvement.

How Orthognathic Surgery Works

Before receiving orthognathic surgery, you’ll meet with one of our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons for a comprehensive consultation.  During this initial evaluation, they will conduct a thorough oral examination and devise a tailored treatment plan that addresses your unique concerns and objectives. Advanced 3D scans may be used to further diagnose your condition.

On the day of your surgery, you will receive anesthesia to induce a comfortable sleep state, ensuring a pain-free procedure. Subsequently, incisions are made within the oral cavity to access the jawbones, mitigating the risk of external scarring. Depending on the nature of your condition, small fixation devices such as plates or screws may be employed to secure the repositioned jawbones. Following the surgical adjustments, incisions are closed with sutures.

Following your procedure, a brief hospital stay may be necessary for monitoring and recovery. Expect some degree of discomfort and swelling in the ensuing weeks, necessitating adherence to dietary restrictions and meticulous adherence to postoperative instructions to facilitate a smooth recuperation journey.

Types of Anesthesia

To ensure your comfort, we offer several forms of anesthesia:

Orthognathic in Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a specialized treatment approach in orthodontics aimed at correcting severe skeletal discrepancies in the jaws and facial structure. This procedure is typically recommended when traditional orthodontic treatment alone cannot address significant issues such as improper bite alignment, facial asymmetry, or malocclusions resulting from skeletal abnormalities. Surgical orthodontics involves collaboration between an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to achieve optimal results.

The process of surgical orthodontics begins with comprehensive orthodontic treatment to align the teeth as much as possible within the jaws. Once the teeth are properly positioned, the surgical phase begins. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs precise surgical procedures on the jawbones to reposition them into the correct alignment. This may involve repositioning the upper jaw (maxilla), lower jaw (mandible), or both, depending on the specific needs of the patient. After surgery, the patient undergoes a period of postoperative orthodontic treatment to fine-tune the bite and ensure optimal occlusion.

Surgical orthodontics offers numerous benefits for patients with severe skeletal discrepancies. Firstly, it can significantly improve facial aesthetics by harmonizing the proportions of the jaws and soft tissues, leading to a more balanced and attractive facial profile. Secondly, correcting skeletal discrepancies through surgery can alleviate functional issues such as difficulty chewing, speaking, or breathing, thus enhancing overall quality of life. Additionally, surgical orthodontics can help prevent or mitigate long-term dental and craniofacial problems that may arise from untreated skeletal abnormalities, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders or excessive tooth wear. Overall, surgical orthodontics is a powerful treatment modality that can achieve remarkable improvements in both function and aesthetics for patients with complex orthodontic concerns.
