Should You Surgically Correct Your Overbite?

Having an overbite can be inconvenient, to say the least. Depending on the cause of your overbite, you may have several choices when it comes to correcting it. One of the most severe forms of correction is surgery.

Usually reserved as a last resort when other forms of correction such as braces and other forms of dental mechanical correction have failed, or when your dentist determines that your overbite is too severe to respond to such forms of correction.

Overbite Surgery

An overbite can be a minor nuisance, or it can be a major problem. A serious overbite can lead to problems with chewing, speaking, and jaw pain. It can also contribute to early and aggressive wearing of the teeth as they strike each other unevenly.

If you have an extreme overbite, you may be considering surgery. Consider that surgery is a drastic remedial step, and one that should not be approached lightly. While only you can determine if surgery is your best option, consider that surgery is usually only used in cases where the overbite is a result of a skeletal issue, and where the patient is an adult.

If the patient is a child, his or her jaw is still developing, and less severe methods of correction can almost always bring about the desired results. Even in cases where the patient is not a child, surgery should only be considered as a last option.
