Is There Ever a Time Where a Denture is Better Than an Implant?

Missing teeth need to be replaced. The traditional way to do this was by using dentures. However, in recent years, the preferred choice for replacing lost teeth is dental implants. Implants have numerous benefits over traditional dentures that would make them seem like the best option. However, is there ever a time when getting dentures is better than implants?

Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth set on a gum colored base. They are made from molds of your mouth, to ensure fit, and are supported by your gums and the bone underneath. Dentures do nothing for the bone mass in your jaw and, over time, the bone begins to deteriorate. Eventually, your dentures will no longer fit and you will need to be refitted. Dentures also may slide out of place. And, they require a substantial amount of care every night.

Dental Implants

Dental implants, on the other hand, are a permanent solution. Titanium rods are surgically placed into the jawbone and act as anchors to hold false teeth. The rods fuse with the bone and mimic the roots of natural teeth. What this means is that you won't suffer bone loss, so your jaw won't change shape. While time is required for healing, implants only require the same maintenance as your natural teeth and tend to be an overall better choice.

Can Dentures Be Better?

There are a few times when dentures might be the better option. The first reason is cost related. Implants cost far more than dentures, especially if you are having all of your teeth replaced. And most insurance companies will only cover a portion of that cost.

Dentures are also the better choice if you suffer from bruxism. If you are a smoker, the habit can affect the healing process and even cause implants to fail. Finally, implants require a sufficient amount of bone mass in order to be successful, so if your jaw is weak, dentures are most likely your best option.

Both dentures and dental implants serve to replace missing teeth. Contact our office if you wish to discuss your options.
