How to Sleep Following a Tooth Extraction

If you recently had a tooth extracted, or about to have one taken out, it is important you know how to rest properly to enhance your recovery. If you rest the wrong way, it can actually delay your recovery efforts.

For example, if you lie on your back, it could cause more problems that may delay how quickly your mouth is able to heal. Here are a few tips on proper care following a tooth extraction.

Sleeping Must Be Done Elevated

Following any type of oral surgery, including a tooth extraction, you should sleep elevated for the first 2-3 nights. This allows your body to drain more of the fluid away from the extraction site.

If you were to lie flat on your back, the amount of swelling is much more likely to increase. This can make your pain go from tolerable to intolerable, and it can also restart your bleeding after the procedure.

Instead, you should prop a few pillows behind your back to properly support you, and then sleep. Just make sure you are on a surface you won't slide off of, like a slippery leather couch.

Other Tips to Improve Your Recovery

On top of sleeping right, make sure you are also caring for yourself properly. Do not use a straw until healing is completed, and the same goes with smoking.

Both can cause your clot to come out, and leave you in a lot of pain. You should also care for your mouth precisely how you were instructed. Brush gently and rinse regularly with salt water. This speeds up healing.
