Problems with Exercising Too Soon Following an Extraction

If you are one of those people who just love to exercise, good for you! We're happy that you have taken your health and welfare so seriously. Still, if you are planning on coming to our office for an extraction, you need to know that it's a good idea to take things easy for a few days after having the procedure done.

There are a number of reasons for this. Keep in mind that we have been practicing dentistry for a long time and, while we make every effort to be sure the procedure goes as smoothly as possible, there is a small amount of trauma that comes along with an extraction.

Your Sutures Are Still in the Process of Healing

Most likely, we will have made some incisions in your gum tissue during the extraction procedure. After we have finished, we will close these incisions and suture them together. However, even if you feel great, remember that you have a healing wound in your mouth.

Exercising too soon-or too strenuously-could elevate your blood pressure to the point where the sutures begin to bleed. You don't want to have to deal with this, so it is probably for the best if you just take things easy for a few days.

You May Still Be Feeling the Effects of the Anesthetic

Also, remember that you were given some powerful anesthetic during the procedure. While this is a great aid to making a procedure go smoothly and with as little pain as possible, some anesthetics remain in your system for quite some time following the procedure.

Strenuous exercise could cause you to feel some adverse effects from the medication. It's best to hold off on exercise for at least 3 days after a procedure. Following that, you should ease back into things. This will help ensure a smooth recovery.
