Managing Pain After Jaw Surgery

Jaw surgery is an important procedure that many of our dental patients go through for one reason or another. After getting surgery, we often have patients complaining about discomfort.

Unfortunately, some discomfort comes with procedures like dental implants and corrective surgery for TMJ, but that doesn't mean you have to live in pain either. Below is our advice on how to minimize jaw pain after surgery and how to ensure a speedy recovery.

Ice and Rest
Do your best to rest your jaw and to apply ice to it regularly. By applying ice throughout the day, you can minimize swelling and discomfort. We recommend our patients apply ice for no more than 15 minutes at a time and then to rest for at least 15 minutes before applying the ice again. Try to avoid excess chewing or talking during the recovery period after surgery.

Pain Killers
After jaw surgery, there's going to be plenty of discomfort and even pain. That's why we prescribe pain killers to our patients directly after surgery. We recommend that you follow the dosages given to you on the bottle for the best results. Usually the pain medication will cover most of the recovery period, but if you run out before your jaw pain has subsided entirely we recommend using an over-the-counter pain medication to help minimize the discomfort.

Eating the Right Foods after Jaw Surgery

There are some foods that you'll want to avoid after going through jaw surgery to keep your mouth feeling its best. This includes hard or chewy foods. Think steak, bubble gum, tough chicken, beef jerky, jawbreakers or anything that isn't easy to chew. We actually recommend that our patients stick with a liquid or at least soft-food based diet for a few days after surgery to keep the jaw feeling its best.

Jaw pain is a very real side-effect of oral surgery and it's something that many of our patients have to deal with, but it doesn't have to be debilitating. As long as you follow the advice above, your pain should be minimal and it will hopefully go away quickly.
