Wisdom Teeth Madison Oral Surgery & Dental Implants WI 53713Wisdom teeth are usually the final set of molars that emerge. While most adult teeth start to emerge at the end of childhood, wisdom teeth often tend to take a little longer. The age at which they can emerge in a person varies considerably. Some people will get them in their teens or twenties.

There are a few people who only start to get their wisdom teeth in their late twenties or early thirties as well. One common problem with wisdom teeth, however is when they are impacted.

What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

“Impacted” wisdom teeth are teeth that simply have not emerged properly. This is because they are located at the back of the mouth. Theoretically, they are just as useful as any other kind of molar, except for the fact that there usually is not enough room for them to grow. When wisdom teeth are impacted, they may only emerge halfway out of the gums. They will often grow in a crooked manner. Of course, impacted teeth like these can then lead to issues.

Issues with Impacted Wisdom Teeth

One of the most common issues that impacted wisdom teeth can cause is pain, usually due to the way they are growing. This pain can often be intense and this usually means that they have to be removed. Aside from pain, an impacted tooth can easily start to decay or become infected. Cysts can also form around the bottom of a wisdom tooth, which ends up causing damage to both the jaw bone and the nerves.
