What is cosmetic surgery?

Posted on 6/5/2023 by Tessa Smith-Greisch
What is cosmetic surgery?Cosmetic surgery is an invasive medical procedure or operation that aims to change one's physical appearance. The procedure is not carried out for medical reasons but for aesthetic purposes. Cosmetic surgery helps boost confidence and self-esteem levels and is performed on any part of the body. However, people need to make wise decisions about whether to undergo cosmetic surgery since the results are permanent and irreversible. The surgeon will refer you for counseling sessions before carrying out the surgery.

Why is a cosmetic surgery done?

Cosmetic surgery causes drastic and irreversible changes in your body. Therefore, you must understand and have a good and convincing reason why you want to undergo the procedure. Other than changing your look, the changes might affect you on the inside. Various physical characteristics can be altered through cosmetic surgery while others cannot. The ideal candidate for cosmetic surgery must have realistic expectations about the procedure or have chronic medical conditions under control. Also, the candidates must have no smoking history or comic to stop smoking and use nicotine products like nicotine patches, lozenges, or chewing tobacco for six months before and after the surgery. Besides, the candidate must fully understand the medical risks of cosmetic surgery. These include how the surgery will affect them professionally and personally, physical effects during the recovery period, the expenses involved, and the lifestyle changes that might occur during the recovery period. In addition, the candidate must have a stable weight for at least one year.

What are cosmetic surgery risks?

Any surgery has some risks, and cosmetic surgery is not an exception. However, people with high blood pressure, diabetes, and overweight have a higher chance of having complications. Some cosmetic surgery risks include incision site infection, mild bleeding, abnormal scarring, blood clots in the lungs and legs, numbness, and fluid build-up under the skin."
