Specific Recovery Tips for After Sinus Lifts

Posted on 8/20/2018 by Tessa Smith-Greisch
Specific Recovery Tips for After Sinus LiftsYou will need a sinus lift if there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw, or the sinuses are too close to the jaw, for dental implants to be placed.

We won't sugar coat it, if you need to get sinus lift surgery the recovery can be unpleasant because of pain and swelling.

Immediately After Surgery

If you follow these tips, right after the surgery, the recovery process will be smoother and shorter:

•  You should not, for any reason blow your nose for the next 4 weeks or for the time specified by our surgeon. If you need to slip that is okay, but do not, under any circumstances, blow your nose.
•  A gauze will be placed in your mouth after surgery. Bite down and maintain firm pressure on it for at least 30 minutes. Replace the gauze and repeat the procedure if necessary to stop bleeding. If you have blood pouring out of the site, let us know right away, because this is not normal.
•  Use an ice pack to the area as soon as possible after surgery, to reduce swelling. This should be done continuously during the first 48 hours after the surgery. Apply for 30 minutes and then take a break for 20 to 30 minutes. Bruising and discoloration around the eyes is common because of the location of the surgery.
•  Eat soft foods as soon as soon as recommended. This will reduce nausea after the surgery.
•  Take your over-the-counter medications as instructed and follow the directions for the prescription medication, if you have one. You can usually alternate between and the other.
•  Refrain from rinsing or spitting for at least 72 hours, because this can disrupt the blood clot that needs to form in your gums to allow for healing.
•  Gently brush your teeth after 48 hours, but avoid the surgery site.
•  Take it easy. Relax as much as possible and do not overexert yourself.
•  Do not smoke or drink from a straw for at least three-days. Avoid alcohol if you're taking prescription medications. Smoking can contribute to the failure of a sinus lift.

If the pain doesn't improve within 72 hours of the surgery or there is excessive bleeding, you need to call our office immediately.
