![]() Surgery is not your first option, however, and those who suffer from this disruptive condition start with CPAP therapy. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure that comes as a mask that is placed over the nose to help with interrupted breathing during sleep. In most cases, CPAP therapy is successful, but some patients need surgery. There are several types of surgery to treat sleep apnea depending on its severity, and our experienced team of oral surgeons will choose the one that is best for your situation. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)UPPP is a soft palate surgery to fix the back of the roof of your mouth or palate. During this procedure, our surgeon removes and repositions excess tissue in the throat to help air circulate better. In some instances, the surgeon will trim down the soft palate and uvula, remove your tonsils, and move the muscles in the soft palate. UPPP is one of the most commonly used surgical procedures to treat sleep apnea, but in cases where the condition is severe, it is used in conjunction with other treatments of the upper airways. Hyoid SuspensionAnother way our oral surgeons can help you treat sleep apnea is with hyoid suspension. In this inpatient procedure, the base of the tongue and other soft tissue around the throat gets pulled forward by holding the hyoid bone in the neck to the thyroid cartilage, also known as the Adam's apple. This surgery expands the airway to allow better flow while sleeping. People with large tongue or relaxed tongue muscles are good candidates for this oral surgery. Genioglossus Advancement (GCA)This procedure is most commonly used with other surgeries to treat sleep apnea. Here our oral surgeons tighten the front of the tendon of the tongue, which helps to reduce any displacement of the back of the muscle in the throat.Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA)MMA is a surgery that moves the jaw and the soft tissue in the tongue and palate forward, enlarging the upper airway and in some cases it's the only procedure that can clear the passageway.Oral surgeons like us can help you with your sleep apnea and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have during a consultation to discuss your options.
