Could a Device to Support Your Jaw Minimize Your Sleep Apnea Issues?

Could a Device to Support Your Jaw Minimize Your Sleep Apnea Issues?People that suffer from sleep apnea are at risk for several problems. It is not only important to find out if you suffer from sleep apnea, it is also important to do something about it.

For some, the treatment for sleep apnea is a bulky machine with a mask that fits over the face while they sleep. Many people are not a fan of this machine and would prefer something easier and smaller to use.

That makes them wonder if they can find some type of device that can help with sleep apnea.

Understanding Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition that interrupts the breathing of the individual during sleep. There are two types of sleep apnea. The most common form is obstructive sleep apnea. The second type is central sleep apnea. In the obstructive form, the soft tissue of the mouth collapses and temporarily blocks the airway. In the central form, the brain fails to send a signal to breathe.

Using a Device

For the people that suffer from the central sleep apnea, a device in the mouth is probably not very effective. The goal of any device to help with sleep apnea is to prevent the blockage of the airway. Keeping the airway open prevents the problems of sleep apnea.

There are typically two types of devices that people turn to combat sleep apnea. The first are the mandibular adjustment devices. These devices move the jaw forward and helps stabilize the tongue and soft palate. The air is then able to stay open. The second type is a tongue retaining device. Like a splint, it holds the tongue in place to prevent the airway blockage.

The use of a device to overcome sleep apnea depends on the individual. One of the upsides to any device that keeps the airway open is that it also reduces or eliminates snoring.
