What Treatment Options You Have for Bony Growths of the Mouth

What Treatment Options You Have for Bony Growths of the MouthThe first time you feel a lump growing in your mouth, you may feel panic setting in.

After all, our society has conditioned people to think that a lump of any sort must be some sort of cancer. But the truth of the matter is that you could very well be developing a torus. If this is the case, you have treatment options, and you should not be concerned that this will be a life-threatening ordeal.

What is a Torus?

A torus is a bony growth or protrusion that can develop for a number of reasons. What's more, roughly 1 in every 5 people in the U.S. will develop a torus at one point in their lives, most frequently during adulthood.

Frequently found in people who eat foods with a lot of calcium, a torus is simply a spot where the bone (or, sometimes, cartilage) begins to grow out and form a lump. Other causes of developing tori include a vitamin deficiency or a diet with a lot of fish in it. In any event, it's not a big deal, and you don't even always have to get treatment.

Treatment Options for Tori in Your Mouth

If the torus is not interfering with your chewing, breathing, or swallowing, you may not even need to do anything at all about it. Other options would include removal or reduction of the torus.

If you do need to have the torus removed or reduced, we will proceed in a similar manner as with a tuberosity reduction. We will numb the area, make a small incision, and grind down the deposit before suturing your gum tissue together again.

Recovery will be fairly fast, with you being fully recovered in about 10 days. So, if you feel a lump, don't panic. Instead, come see us and let us help you.
