Does Implant Surgery Require a Lot of Down Time to Recover?

Posted on 2/10/2020 by Tessa Smith-Greisch
Does Implant Surgery Require a Lot of Down Time to Recover?Dental implants solve a lot of problems. Despite all their benefits, people find excuses not to get them. One of the excuses people give is not having enough time to recover from the implant surgery.

They claim that they cannot afford to take time away from their family or work to recover. Instead of making this excuse, it is better to learn the facts about how long the recovery takes and what it means as you recover.

The Different Types of Recovery

When you are recovering from any surgery, there are variables that impact the length of recovery. For dental implants some of the variables include how many teeth need an extraction and how many implants you need, if you have healthy bone tissue or if you need bone grafts and the individual's ability to heal. Because of that recovery from dental implant surgery can fall into three categories. They are a simple recovery, a moderate recovery and a difficult recovery.

Recovery Times Vary

A simple implant procedure involves a single tooth with healthy bone tissue. There is no need for a bone graft. For this recovery, you can expect some swelling and bruising, but can begin a soft food diet a few days after the surgery before returning to a regular routine. For a moderate procedure where more teeth and implants are involved, but there is still healthy bone tissue, the recovery time is a little longer.

The soft food diet will last 7 to 10 days before you can begin to return to a regular diet. If the implants include many teeth and if bone grafts are done, the recovery time will get even longer. It is necessary for the bone grafts to take hold and for enough healthy bone tissue to grow before putting the implants in. This can take a few weeks to a few months, depending on the individual and how much work was done.

Like any surgery, there are steps to take that can speed up the recovery process. Getting rest and eating healthy foods will give the body the things it needs to heal. Following any other after care instructions can also improve the recovery time. Call us today if you need help with your recovery, or want a consult about getting implants.
