A Dental Abscess Needs to Be Treated ASAP

Posted on 10/5/2020 by Tessa Smith-Greisch
A Dental Abscess Needs to Be Treated ASAPAn abscess in the tooth is called a periapical abscess while one occurring in the gum tissue is known as a periodontal abscess. There are a number of different infections that can harm your oral, and overall, health and one of the more severe is called an abscess. This infection is considered very serious because it occurs in the tooth's pulp, which is the interior soft tissue containing the blood supply for the tooth and acts as the nerve center. It is vital to have an abscess treated as soon as possible because if left unchecked, this infection could easily spread to other areas of the body.

Symptoms of an Abscess?

Abscesses have a variety of symptoms, including intense throbbing in the infected tooth or along the gums supporting the tooth. Pain might spread to the ear and jaw if left untreated. Pain will grow worse when lying down, which will make it difficult to sleep. There might be a discolored tooth, which may be loose and there can be swollen gums which are red and puffy. Persistent bad breath and over sensitivity to hot or cold food and drinks can also be indicators the patient has an abscess.

Will an Abscess Heal Itself?

This type of infection will not simply heal itself. Bacterial in nature, the abscess needs to be treated with a thorough cleaning, removing all the bacteria and infected tissues. Once it is appropriately cleaned and prepared, the patient will need to complete a course of antibiotics. It is important to take all antibiotic pills even if the symptoms begin to improve. If you do not complete the course of pills, the infection can grow worse and the symptoms will return.
