Root canal procedures are generally effective and safe. These procedures have a success rate of over 95%. As much as root canal procedures are mostly successful, some cases where redoing them are necessary. Some of the signs that show you need to redo your root canal procedure include persistent swellings, severe and persistent pain, and pus-filled or bloody discharge.
Persistent Swelling
Swelling is one of the early symptoms that you need to redo the procedure. After the procedure, you will experience mild swelling, especially around the treated area. However, as much as the swelling could be normal after a root canal procedure, persistent swelling could mean something else. In that case, you will have to redo the root canal procedure and fix the affected area.
Severe and Persistent Pain
After a root canal procedure, pain or discomfort around the treated area is very common. The pain is experienced for the first few days but disappears thereafter. However, if the pain becomes severe and persistent, it could be a sign of a failed root canal procedure. In that case, you will have to redo it. It is important to note that the pain caused by a healing wound is different from that of a worsening condition. Knowing the difference between them is very important.
Discharge
A pus-filled or bloody discharge from the affected area and surrounding tissues could be a sign of a new oral abscess. If that is the case, then you should think of redoing the root canal procedure. However, it is important to note that some discharge could be due to interfering with the recovering wound. Therefore, if you aggressively brushed over the wound during cleaning, it is normal to notice blood discharge. Visit our offices for more information on root canal procedures.
