Unusual TMJ Symptoms to Be Aware Of

Posted on 12/10/2019 by Tessa Smith-Greisch
Unusual TMJ Symptoms to Be Aware OfTMJ is an acronym that stands for temporomandibular joint. TMJ is a condition affecting the temporomandibular joint and is also sometimes referred to as TMD, temporomandibular disorder.

The affected joint in the jaw lies below the cheekbone and become inflamed and irritated due to stress. The most common reason TMJ occurs is because of teeth grinding also known as bruxism. You may be familiar with some of the symptoms of TMJ. These symptoms can include pain below the cheek, difficulty chewing, and popping of the jaw. However, there are some symptoms that may be mistaken for other conditions that you need to be aware of.

Lesser Known Symptoms

One of the lesser known symptoms of TMJ is ear ringing. Sufferers of TMJ often experience a constant ringing sound in their ear. Sometimes people with this symptom mistake it for another medical condition called tinnitus. You may be afflicted with tinnitus if you have ringing in your ear, but if the ringing is coupled with pain around the hinge of the jaw, it could be TMJ.

Another lesser known symptom of TMJ is pain in the front of the face. Often times the pain associated with TMJ is described as being near the jaw hinge, but in some circumstances, the nerves towards the front of the face can become irritated by the condition and cause unusual pain in the face. While not all face pain is related to TMJ, you may have TMJ if the pain is coupled with popping of the jaw or pain near the ear.

Though the symptoms of TMJ are easy to identify, they often get confused with other symptoms of other conditions. If you're experiencing pain in your jaw or any of the other symptoms described, call our office. We can set up an appointment and help you solve your pain.
