How Implants Prevent Bone Loss Madison, WI
Restoring missing teeth with dental implants is a great option for a long term restoration. Implants provide the closest feeling and natural response to your own teeth. If you have missing teeth, or teeth that are unhealthy beyond repair, our team at Madison Oral Surgery & Dental Implants will work closely with you to discuss treatment and create a plan to best fit your needs.
A common concern of many of our patients is whether they are a candidate for the surgical placement of dental implants. For most of our patients, the answer is a firm yes, and even our more medically delicate patients are often approved. This is because implant placement is only minimally invasive. The most important criteria is the ability to heal in a timely manner. At Madison Oral Surgery & Dental Implants we will discuss various candidacy requirements during your consultation. Taking steps in preparation for dental implants is an important step to get the end result we are looking for. Overall, dental implants have a very high rate of success, which is due in part to the careful preparation that goes into the planning.
Successful implants require timely healing. We do an extensive amount of the work in the planning phase including making predictions of success and eliminating potential problems. Healing at a reasonable rate can be impeded by a number of factors including:
• |
Medical Ailments: There are medical problems that can slow your body's natural healing process. This may include patients battling diabetes, patients receiving cancer treatment and more. It’s important to reveal any medical condition you may currently have, as well as conditions you battled in the past, even if it seems irrelevant. We can discuss those conditions, or even collect more information from your personal physician if needed. Conditions that limit healing could limit the success of implantation. We may be able to discuss alternatives or changes that can be made to increase success.
|
• |
Medication: Some medications may limit your body’s ability to heal at a reasonable rate. We will want to be notified of any and all legal and illegal substances you are ingesting, even if it seems irrelevant or personal. This will help us determine if successful implantation is possible.
|
• |
Smoking: Smoking tobacco or marijuana can cause negative effects to your oral health and should not be done while healing. The heat of the smoking reduces saliva production leaving the patient more susceptible to infection. There are also properties that can limit healing such as temporary paralysis to the tissue. |
Studies have shown restoration with dental implants to have a very high rate of success. This is because of multiple factors including the careful planning that is completed prior to surgery.
Patients who have conditions that could limit healing does not necessarily eliminate candidacy. We can discuss these conditions and the options you may have during your consultation. We want to do what we can for this procedure to be successful. If we determine that dental implants are not right at this time, that does not eliminate them as a possibility in the future. We could temporarily place a different prosthetic until your health or ability to heal has increased. |
